Sherif combines multiple academic disciplines, such as Political Economy, Entrepreneurship and Sociology, drawing on leading scholarly research and anchoring theories with practical case studies. The result is a robust approach to teaching that puts student education at its centre.

Across three different faculties at the University of Leeds, Sherif has a diverse teaching portfolio, covering modules ranging from Business and Strategic Management to Sociology of Work, Environment and Sustainability. Through this, he has gained skills for communicating complex theoretical concepts to a diverse pool of students and supporting them with timely feedback.

Delivering research-led teaching

Sherif designs and delivers teaching based on his sustainability and business research. He takes great influence from his pedagogic research, using theory and practical cases so his students experience real-world business issues.
Providing live examples of his research in action helps Sherif’s students develop their critical thinking and problem-based learning skills, as well as improve their confidence. For Sherif, building student self-belief is integral to his teaching, and he has contributed to different quality assurance mechanisms to support this approach. These include in-session peer reviews and acting on students’ formal feedback.

Interdisciplinary tools and practices

Sherif has a strong interest in neuroscience and uses state-of-the-art research to better understand the functioning of the mind and brain. Applying this knowledge to his teaching, he uses evidence-based tools to enhance his students’ focus, learning and memory.

Sherif has clear evidence of the success of this method, finding his teaching practice improves when he applies active learning tools. These include student-led debates, discussions and multimedia to establish a connection between theory and practice, advance student learning, and support student education – via a stimulating and relevant learning environment. Sherif also uses a wide variety of technology tools (such as the classroom sharing web app Padlets) to engage students and collect their feedback throughout the semester.

As well as enhancing his teaching practices, Sherif is committed to continuing his personal development. To improve his professional practice, he has participated in extensive corporate and academic training and holds a Professional Certified Trainer certificate (PCT) from the American University in Cairo. Sherif is currently finalising his application for the Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), where he hopes to expand his knowledge, beliefs and values and apply his new learning to his developing teaching practices.
