Extensive qualifications in his research areas
Sherif applies his academic knowledge to his research today. He has studied management, economics and social policy at universities worldwide, gaining a Master of Research (MRes) in Advanced Marketing Management from Lancaster University, a Master of Arts (MA) in Social and Public Policy from the University of Leeds, and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in General Management from the German University in Cairo.
Today, Sherif is in the final stages of his PhD in Business and Economics from the School of Business at the University of Leeds.
Experience working in his fields of study
Sherif approaches his research with experience beyond academia. Before beginning his studies in 2014, he spent three years working in management consulting, marketing and human resource management in MENA (Middle East and North Africa).
In MENA, Sherif advised clients in the public and private sectors on a number of management issues, including process management re-engineering and performance management. He also carried out feasibility studies to support their business growth.
Educated in UK-based teaching practices
In early 2017, Sherif began teaching and research in UK universities, where he was able to access state-of-the-art neuroscience research, demonstrate his commitment to ongoing professional development, further his areas of study and explore new teaching methods. Alongside, he gained industry experience in delivering corporate training.
Thanks to his time at two different research-intensive universities, Sherif has taught across a range of modules, from strategic management and sociology of work to business, environment and sustainability. His drive to improve the experience of both undergraduate and postgraduate students studying across different faculties led him to further research, and then on to his role as a Research Fellow at Leeds Social Sciences Institute at the University of Leeds before progressing to Teaching Fellow.
Extended studies into sustainable social change
Today, Sherif explores how entrepreneurship, politics and economic theory coexist. He builds on his research into how organisations create change, not profit (for example, social enterprises in developing countries), to see how they can address their societal needs and generate income. Sherif has worked in this field globally, both in the MENA region and in the UK.
Steered by impact-driven research, Sherif collaborates with local governments and UK-based SMEs to address key issues which include inclusive growth, setting foundations for building community wealth, and creating different pathways to put progressive policies such as universal basic income in place. To date, Sherif has presented his research at a number of national and international conferences. These include the British Sociological Association Annual Conference, the British Academy of Management Doctoral Symposium, the Marketing and Public Policy Conference and the International Sociological Association Conference. Much of his research is funded by ESRC, the UK government and the Open Society Foundations.
